Robertson was born in Unionville, Illinois and served briefly in the Civil War as a member of the 8th Illinois Cavalry. After the war he returned to Illinois and eventually traveled to Helena, Montana to work in the gold fields and later worked on cattle drives in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
